Knowing God on a First Name Basis - Really!

The God of the Bible

The God of the Bible is one. The great foundation scripture for understanding this is Deuteronomy 6:4-5 " 4 'Listen, Israel: Yahweh our God is the one, the only Yahweh. 5 You must love Yahweh your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength."

In order to understand who God is and to know Him, it is tremendously important to know that He identifies himself by a name. That name is written with four Hebrew letters that approximate our "YHWH" in English. The one God of the scriptures identifies himself by that name. In Isaiah 42:8 God tells us, "I am Yahweh, that is my name!" In Isaiah 45:5 Yahweh says, " I am Yahweh, and there is no other, there is no other God except me."

How To Invoke (Call on) God

Yahweh spoke to Moses in Exodus 3:15 and told him that Yahweh was His name for all time and He was to be invoked by that name for all generations to come. "15 God further said to Moses, 'You are to tell the Israelites, "Yahweh, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you." This is my name for all time, and thus I am to be invoked for all generations to come."

Winning over Type B Malnutrition

We appreciate health the most when we lose it. It is easy to take good health for granted when we have always had it. Lasting good health is not just a matter of having the right genes. A major factor in good health is the right nutrition.

When you hear the word 'malnutrition' what image does that conjure up in your mind? Most of us think of pictures we have seen of children in 3rd world countries with super-thin arms and legs and bloated tummies. In developed countries we now have something described as 'modern' or 'type b malnutrition. "What is that?" you ask. Dentist and nutritional therapist Alison Adams gives us the answer:

I am the author of this site and I do not drink coffee. Most members of my family do, including our 5 children, so it is important to me that all you coffee drinkers have access to the healthiest coffee in the world. In addition, I believe proper nutrition to be extremely important.

But there is something infinitely more important than that. The wisest man that ever lived once said, "What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" That man, Jesus, once did something no one else had ever done in the Bible as plainly as he did. He defined eternal life. He told us clearly what it is. He did it in a prayer to the Father. How did Jesus define eternal life in that prayer?

I was born into the family of a Baptist preacher a long time ago. By the time I was 13, he had pastored 4 churches in Pennsylvania: Hilltown, Phillipsburg, Danville and Bristol.

When I was 13, Dad was invited to help establish churches with the Los Angeles Baptist City Mission Society. What a change that was!  We were temporarily housed in a downtown LA apartment owned by the Society.

A gang member picked a fight with me at Hollenbeck Junior High the first day of school. Two months later we moved to Inglewood, a great place to live back then, and life became bearable again. However, the experience at Hollenbeck left me bitter and angry.

The summer before High School an encounter with the Lord Jesus at a camp in the mountains transformed me and four other students and I revived an on-campus Christian Fellowship. By the time we graduated, the group had grown to more than 350.

That experience changed the future course of my life. At BJU I joined a musical team with my trumpet and spent two summers on mission trips to Mexico and Guatemala. Read more on the About Page!
