Knowing God on a First Name Basis - Really!

The God of the Bible

The God of the Bible is one. The great foundation scripture for understanding this is Deuteronomy 6:4-5 " 4 'Listen, Israel: Yahweh our God is the one, the only Yahweh. 5 You must love Yahweh your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength."

In order to understand who God is and to know Him, it is tremendously important to know that He identifies himself by a name. That name is written with four Hebrew letters that approximate our "YHWH" in English. The one God of the scriptures identifies himself by that name. In Isaiah 42:8 God tells us, "I am Yahweh, that is my name!" In Isaiah 45:5 Yahweh says, " I am Yahweh, and there is no other, there is no other God except me."

How To Invoke (Call on) God

Yahweh spoke to Moses in Exodus 3:15 and told him that Yahweh was His name for all time and He was to be invoked by that name for all generations to come. "15 God further said to Moses, 'You are to tell the Israelites, "Yahweh, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you." This is my name for all time, and thus I am to be invoked for all generations to come."

As I read the above verses, I find it astounding that in Judaism, Catholicism and Protestantism, the special name by which God identifies himself is practically forgotten. There are a couple of translations that use either Jehovah or Yahweh, but it is rare to hear them quoted in public gatherings. Judaism itself has fallen into the superstition that the very name by which God himself says he is to be invoked "for all generations to come" is too sacred to ever be pronounced.

The predominance of translations that do not use the name of God has made it much easier to perpetuate a totally false identification of the one true God. There is only one Yahweh. He alone is God. Contrary to what some affirm, Yeshua (Jesus) is not the Yahweh of the Old Testament. Yeshua is Yahweh's son. His Father alone is Yahweh. If, as some teach, "Jesus" is the Yahweh of the Old Testament, then the Father is practically eliminated from the Bible. Yeshua (Hebrew: y'hoshua) means "Yahweh is salvation". Yeshua is the lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.

Eternal Life Defined

Yeshua (Jesus) plainly says that knowing the Father, the only true God and knowing Yeshua, God's anointed, is eternal life. Jesus, praying to the Father in John 17:3 from the New Jerusalem Bible reads "3 And eternal life is this: to know you , the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent." From a Bible that restores Hebrew names, we read, "And this is life eternal, that they should know thee the only true Elohim, and him whom thou didst send, even Yahshua Ha Mashiyach."

I do not mean at all to berate anyone for not using  the names "Yahweh" and "Yashua" or "Yeshua". Nor do I mean to say you must use forms such as Yahweh or Jehovah to be saved. Jesus taught us to pray saying, "Our Father, who art in heaven." What I emphasize here, is that having allowed the name of the one true God to fall into disuse, has made it much easier to forget who both God and his son really are. It is widely believed in Christendom that to deny that God is a trinity is to be lost and damned forever to the fires of hell. Nowhere does the Bible demand belief in a triune God. Tragically, this keeps millions of sincere people from fully knowing the one true God of the Bible.

The First of All Commandments

When Yeshua (Jesus) was asked by a scribe, "Which is the first of all the commandments?", he answered by quoting what Jewish people know as the Sh'ma Yisrael, or just the Shema. He quoted Deuteronomy 6:4-5 " 4 'Listen, Israel: Yahweh our God is the one, the only Yahweh. 5 You must love Yahweh your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength."

Knowing God

The most powerful way to know these truths is to lift your heart in repentance to God in prayer and say, "Yahweh, God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, I come to you in the name of Yeshua, your son. Your word says, 'Everyone who calls on the name of Yahweh will be saved!' I call on you now, Yahweh, my God. Reveal yourself to me in all your fullness and glory. In the name of Yeshua, Amen!"

Make It Real

Now follow the example of New Testament believers and in response to Peter's words on the day of Pentecost, be immersed (baptized) in the name of the Messiah, Yeshua. (Acts 2:38-39 - 38 And Peter said unto them, Repent ye, and be immersed every one of you in the name of Yahshua Ha Mashiyach (Jesus the anointed) for the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For to you is the promise, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as Yahweh our Elohim (God) shall call unto him.)

How God Reveals Himself

It is your wonderful privilege now to receive Yahweh God's spirit. The scriptures reveal that Yeshua is God's lamb who takes away the sins of the world. He is also the one who baptizes (immerses) in the holy spirit. As you are immersed you can say, "Father, I receive your spirit." Expect to receive the spirit in a way that reflects the way the spirit was received in the New Testament. Peter speaks of rejoicing with joy unspeakable and full of glory. This is a wonderful description of many who experience the reception of the spirit and begin speaking and glorifying God in tongues.

Psalm 16:11 " You have made known to me the path of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence,
with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

30-40 years ago I was so bold telling people, "Jesus Christ is not God, never was, and never will be." I saw many Jews, Muslims, and "orthodox" church people saved. I also had many staunch Trinitarians condemn me to their god's eternal conscious torment in Hell-fire. I have gotten mellower, wiser, easier to be entreated. Perhaps too much so. Days are evil, time is short, once again we need to shout these truths from the roof-tops.

I really learned very little in my youth about God.....I have learned much more as I matured in this life and found avery heart felt desire to know our father and his son,the purpose of it all.

I was born into the family of a Baptist preacher a long time ago. By the time I was 13, he had pastored 4 churches in Pennsylvania: Hilltown, Phillipsburg, Danville and Bristol.

When I was 13, Dad was invited to help establish churches with the Los Angeles Baptist City Mission Society. What a change that was!  We were temporarily housed in a downtown LA apartment owned by the Society.

A gang member picked a fight with me at Hollenbeck Junior High the first day of school. Two months later we moved to Inglewood, a great place to live back then, and life became bearable again. However, the experience at Hollenbeck left me bitter and angry.

The summer before High School an encounter with the Lord Jesus at a camp in the mountains transformed me and four other students and I revived an on-campus Christian Fellowship. By the time we graduated, the group had grown to more than 350.

That experience changed the future course of my life. At BJU I joined a musical team with my trumpet and spent two summers on mission trips to Mexico and Guatemala. Read more on the About Page!
