The Power of Praise – Total Praise

My wife and I were recently in a church that we often visit. The musicians are awesome and the singing is captivating. Not long ago, on a snowy Wednesday night we went there for a special service to hear visiting preacher, Keith Moore. When the singing and worship began at the beginning of the service, we immediately noticed there was a new black brother on an organ that had been without a player for several weeks.

It was captivating to watch him as he played, sang and worshipped along with the rest of the musicians and the congregation. He had large headphones over his ears and a wonderful look on his face as he played and sang. After three or four songs, there was a pause, a short musical introduction to the next song by the new brother and then he began to sing, “Lord, I will lift mine eyes to the hills…” In a moment the choir joined him as he continued, “…knowing my help… is coming from you…”

All around me people began lifting their hands toward heaven...

I had been seated, as had been many others, but soon we were all on our feet. Many of us were weeping, as we continued, “Your peace You give me in time of the STORM! You are the source of my strength! You are the strength of my life! I lift my hands in total praise to YOU!” We sang those words several times to the LORD Yahweh, our creator. The atmosphere was transformed. It was as though each one of us was suddenly alone with God, and yet, at the same time we were all joined together in Him as we really did lift our hearts to him in TOTAL praise. Even now, I weep with gratitude to my LORD as I write these words.

When I returned home that night, I went on YouTube and found this marvelous rendition of that same song, written by Richard Smallwood and sung at a maximum security prison by the Brooklyn Tabernacle Singers. I invite to go there and experience it as I have, and as have many others as borne out by the commentaries on this and many other renditions of the song on YouTube!

I was born into the family of a Baptist preacher a long time ago. By the time I was 13, he had pastored 4 churches in Pennsylvania: Hilltown, Phillipsburg, Danville and Bristol.

When I was 13, Dad was invited to help establish churches with the Los Angeles Baptist City Mission Society. What a change that was!  We were temporarily housed in a downtown LA apartment owned by the Society.

A gang member picked a fight with me at Hollenbeck Junior High the first day of school. Two months later we moved to Inglewood, a great place to live back then, and life became bearable again. However, the experience at Hollenbeck left me bitter and angry.

The summer before High School an encounter with the Lord Jesus at a camp in the mountains transformed me and four other students and I revived an on-campus Christian Fellowship. By the time we graduated, the group had grown to more than 350.

That experience changed the future course of my life. At BJU I joined a musical team with my trumpet and spent two summers on mission trips to Mexico and Guatemala. Read more on the About Page!
